INT. RESIDENTIAL BLOCK HALLWAY – DAY

Techno music plays loudly.

Hal and Afaz approach the door of the noisy apartment. They draw their sidearms. Hal knocks.

HAL

Hello?

There is no answer.

HAL (CONT’D)

Hello, sir? Madam?

Hal pushes the door – it is locked. He looks at Afaz. Afaz shrugs. They stand back. Afaz kicks in the door.

Inside we see a room filled with automatic rifles in crates – along with grenades and other weapons. The room is bare but contains a sofa, a laptop and a satellite phone. There is a large sound system playing internet radio at maximum volume. A man lies on a sofa. He had passed out with an empty bottle of tequila in his hand and a rifle across his chest. Hal and Afaz approach – the DRUNKEN WATCHMAN does not move.

RESIDENT #1

(O.S.)

Did you find anything?

Still the man does not stir. Hal edges towards the rifle on his chest. He tries to lift it but the Drunken Watchman only snores and grips it tighter. Hal grasps the barrel with one hand, holding his sidearm in the other, he turns to Afaz and nods. Afaz turns off the music. With this, the watchman wakes with a start and jumps to his feet, scattering the bottle and his weapon. He backs into a corner. Hal and Afaz keep their weapons raised.

HAL

Don’t be alarmed sir, we’d just like to know what’s going on.

RESIDENT #2

(O.S.)

Thank you, will you bring them out now?

AFAZ

We’re here to help you. We’re the police.

On hearing this, the watchman begins pacing back and forth across the room, before taking a running jump out the window. He falls onto the street one storey below. He breaks his ankle in the fall and lets out a withering yelp of pain. Hal and Afaz watch from the apartment window. The people on the street are hushed with surprise.

AFAZ (CONT’D)

Now what?

~~~
ALICE: Why the fuck would you do that?
DAVID: What do you mean why – what makes you think I did it? What makes you think I did anything?
ALICE: “What”? Because it’s always you that’s “what” – that’s why.
DAVID: She never said who was there. How do I know it wasn’t you?
ALICE: What do I care? I don’t care who you think did it – I’m concerned only with who I think did it – whom – who? Fuck sake.
DAVID: Calm down, she’ll get better.
ALICE: “Better” there was nothing “wrong” with her before.
DAVID: Look…
ALICE: And don’t look at me. Don’t look at me. We have enough to worry about right now without that as well.
DAVID: Ok, you’re right – [ironically] don’t calm down – if it makes you feel better. I’m not looking at you … ok? … you can turn around now.
ALICE: Thanks.
DAVID: Why don’t you tell me what happened?
A stage play for six players with one set and some lighting effects.
~~~

A telephone rings.

Man: [To audience] Can you hear something? [To Fred] Fred? I feel sick. Maybe it’s the smoke alarm. [Looks around] No smoke. [Runs to the window and looks out] No fire. [To Fred] Something’s got to be burning. Maybe it’s in my head – I feel sick. I’ll just go on as normal: there’s no sound; there’s no ringing. If there’s no-one else here, who’s gonna know – right? [To Fred] You’re still here; you know. I wish I were under water; there’s no way you can hear that. Maybe a muffled warble but not that ringing. I promise it will stop. It can’t go on forever. No-one sits with a ringing phone in their hand forever – something will eventually distract them – the kettle will boil, the toast will be ready. They’ll be sitting there… Who the hell are they? And what do they want with me?

The telephone continues ringing. He sits down.

Man: This was meant to be my new year. This one was mine like all the others. It wasn’t taken with my consent, it’s been taken without. Who can I talk to now? This isn’t going to go well.

He gets up, rummages through some cupboards, finds the telephone and picks up the receiver.

Man: [Without hesitation and in a vaguely military manner] Hello.

A stage play for ten players, with live music and some lighting effects.

~~~
Scene opens with Anabel’s Dad walking out onto a balcony, attempting to cool off. Anabel’s Mum follows.
Anabel’s Mum: Why did you give her that awful thing?
Anabel’s Dad: She doesn’t like painting, it gives her headaches.
Anabel’s Mum: Whoever heard such nonsense! “It gives her headaches”. You give her headaches. You’ve always been not one thing, not the other. That’s it – isn’t it? That’s always been you. How will she ever be something?
Anabel’s Dad: I’m not like that.
Anabel’s Mum: You are and you know you are. You never could stick to one thing – always looking around – just like a lighthouse [demonstrates]. What do you think she’s going to learn from that?
Anabel’s Dad: I’ve got a wonderful life. I’ve got you, I’ve got Anabel, we’ve got this place – home. I don’t need any more.
Anabel’s Mum: Just don’t go confusing the girl. Let her find her own way. My little girl can figure this out. You remember her size; nothing’s known to the newborns.
Anabel’s Dad: I think the blue scares her.
Anabel’s Mum: But not the green.
Anabel’s Dad: [Laughing] She really loves that, you know she ate half a tube yesterday? [Pause] You’re not feeding her right.
Anabel’s Mum: Oh I’m not feeding her? Why don’t you help out sometime?
The picking and plunking of a beginner on a guitar begins in the background.
Anabel’s Dad: I help, I help. Hey, why don’t I make you both something nice tonight? Just sit down, relax and I’ll take care of everything [exits].
Anabel’s Mum: Hear that Annie? You’re getting a new dad [exits].
The fire rises endlessly, from the flame we built tonight
As the embers glow for evermore – forever out of sight
For it may come and it may go, the fire and the light
But in the end the fires burn – until the end of time
And while it burns, the firelight
And while we’re all drawn here
We’ll live as one by the fireside
So let the storm draw near
